Recently, hoards of mosquitoes have been pestering us, leaving itchy bites and dark scar marks. I'm an avid follower of Tiny Buds and I heard so much about this brand of baby products, and I am relieved to know that they have a scar gel for babies: Tiny Buds Lighten Up!
I also noticed that Alexa has already learned how to scratch itchy areas. Unfortunately, last week she also had a scar that bled a little when she reached out to her leg to scratch it. You'll learn that in a split second, babies can hurt themselves if you don't trim their nails as soon as they needed trimming. After that incident, we made sure to clothe her with pajamas, and turn on the diffuser to spread citronella oil in the room (and thus, repel mosquitoes).
Like me, my baby is prone to hyperpigmentation due to superficial scarring and insect bites. I wish she could have gotten her skin type from her dad, who happens to have a resilient skin type. I'm happy though that Alexa has a normal skin type, which doesn't get too dry, oily or itchy.
I don't usually expect much from scar gels, having used a lot myself. I've tried brands like Mederma, a pricey scar gel that specializes in hypertrophic scars and keloid, as well as Bio-Oil. They work as expected but I find that it takes very long for hyperpigmented scars to fade or blend with the surrounding skin color. Moreover, these brands are too pricey!
I applied the gel on the dark marks (due to scars) twice a day, after her morning bath and before sleeping. The gel has fast absorbency and a light consistency, which gets a bit watery or thin when applied. It doesn't get sticky when dried, which I also like. Moreover, unlike Mederma, it doesn't leave a thin film.
So did Lighten Up really lived up to its name?
The Verdict
I've tried Lighten Up on her skin for a week now, and I'm more than happy with the results!
The hyperpigmented areas improved significantly. It also works on old dark marks left by insect bites. You can see in the photo that the marks are still noticeable, but I'm glad that they are not as dark as they were when Alexa got them.
I have applied the scar gel on the scarred area which was caused by itching, and lo and behold—I truly am sold as to how this scar gel works. You won't even notice that she had a terrible scar there before. I wish that I could have taken pictures of that scar (but I was too preoccupied with treating it, LOL). I even put a band-aid over it because she kept on scratching it even though she wore pajamas. I think the gel worked as expected because I applied it as soon as the scar dried. Two thumbs up!
My Advice
With a super affordable price of P165 per 20 gram tube, this product is recommended: First-Time Mama (FTM) Approved! I would love to restock on this, as there are many times when Tiny Buds sells out fast during Lazada sales.
More FTM tips:
Make sure to apply the product on baby's dark marks twice a day for better, faster results. Like most scar gels or creams, applying it on a freshly-healed or dried scar will also speed up the process.
Moisturize your baby's skin to create a protective barrier and speed up scar healing and scar lightening.
Do not apply this product on other areas that you want to lighten. It doesn't work that way!
If your baby scratches her skin a lot, consider changing your baby wash or lotions to formulations that offer more hydration and alleviates skin irritation. Frequent itching which is accompanied by dry, cracked or inflamed skin can also be a sign of other underlying problems like baby eczema and milk allergy. Please talk to your baby's pediatrician for cases like this.
