Perhaps one of the most 'cult-famous' products of Mustela is their Vitamin Barrier Cream 123, a diaper rash cream with a claim-to-fame that it 'effectively protects and isolates the skin from aggressions related to humidity and diaper rubbing'. I'm happy to feature another review of a Mustela product, and I am a fan (honestly!). I am, of course, open to trying other baby products for Ayu as long as they are dermatologically-tested and hypoallergenic.
This diaper rash cream is one of the first baby products we used on Ayu since birth, and to this day we are still using it. We took the image above at 4 months of use, and I wrote this review at 5 months. We also featured a review on Mustela Cicastela Moisture Recovery Cream that works as an all-around ointment for rashes, so you might also want to check it.
As a first-time mom, I have to admit that I constantly worry about my baby. Those little bites, or even the tiny scratches, had me reaching for creams and ointments to make those bumps go away. Even before Ayu was born, I had been reading about good and recommended products for every baby-related worry. This product is one of those highly-recommended rash creams in the market. I'm here to tell you why!
Properties and Ingredients
Mustela claims that this diaper rash cream provides:
Complete care of irritations and redness of the diaper area, to be used daily after the baby's change, from birth on
Effective protection, and isolates the skin from aggressions related to humidity and diaper rubbing
The '123' in the label refers to the 3-in-1 action comprised of prevention, relief and continuous relief. Moreover, Mustela claims that this diaper rash cream has 98% of ingredients from natural origins, with no perfumes, parabens or preservative. It comes in 100 ml and 50 ml tubes priced at P490 and P330, respectively.
The active ingredients are listed as follows:
Avocado perseose, which protects the skin barrier, moisturizes and preserves the skin's cellular richness
Oxeoline of Alcacea, which provides relief with its skin-soothing properties
Sunflower oil distillate, which promotes skin repair by providing lipids for the construction of the skin barrier
Zinc oxide, a white, powdery substance used to treat skin irritation by creating a skin barrier. It is also the same mineral used in most diaper rash creams and calamine lotion.
The cream has a thick, creamy consistency, and you can feel that it contains plant-derived oils. There is no scent, or it is almost unnoticeable, except when you whiff it very close to your nostrils. It has a faint plant oil smell that is not bothersome at all, something close to olive oil and sunflower oil.
How we use it:
At each diaper change and after cleansing, we apply a pea-sized amount in her diaper area, concentrating on the skin area in the poo region, and somewhat apply a thin layer in the surrounding area. We do not apply directly in the genital area.
The instructions in the tube says to apply a thick layer to clean, dry skin after each diaper change. A pea-sized amount, we think, goes a long way though. I also tend to apply a thicker layer when we change her diaper in the evening, because her next diaper change will be in the morning (to protect her skin better during the long interval in between diaper changes).
The Verdict:
You might have figured it out long before I even state my verdict: this product is a must-have, truly a good buy, and incredibly effective. You can also tell because we've been using this until today (5 months, yes!).
Firstly, I love it because this rash cream kept my baby's skin in the diaper area pristine, healthy and smooth since birth. We have not encountered a major diaper rash episode, ever. We noted minor episodes of diaper rash covering a small area in her bottom, and we pinpointed that the main cause is forgetting to change her diapers as frequently as possible. Sometimes, my partner and mom-in-law opt not to put diaper rash cream on Ayu because her skin looks pretty okay, and whenever she's too active (she is always on a kicking spree!) that putting those diapers on fast is the top priority! Other than that, we are, indeed, very satisfied, and we think that a repeat purchase of this product is well-deserved.
How fast does this cream clear up diaper rash? Our baby Ayu only experienced minor rash, which cleared up the next day or after two days with liberal use on the affected area. It is a life-saver, really! I am happy that her bottoms feel very smooth and soft to the touch whenever I cleanse and wipe it.
Secondly, the product is also tipid. We expect to use up all the contents of the 100-ml tube by six months, which translates to around P82 per month. You might think that P490 for a 100-ml tube is too much, but if you think of it this way it is actually more cost-effective. I also wouldn't think twice if that means that my baby is getting the best care that she deserves. When baby is less irritated, that means baby will be more comfortable and will cry less. That's also one of the reasons why we sometimes forget to change her diaper often, as she doesn't really cry or fuss when her diapers are full of wee.
My Advice:
Tried and tested, Mustela's Vitamin Barrier Cream 123 is FTM-Approved: this is a product that I will definitely recommend, and I know that I will not be 'mapapahiya' if I do so! For a tube that lasts months, even with pea-sized amounts of application, this is also economical.
I know that there are many moms who complained that calamine lotion and petroleum jelly didn't work to relieve and heal diaper rash, so I recommend that you also consider trying this product for your little bundle of joy.
