I have an olfactory fascination with nice, delightful scents, so it's not surprising at all that I'm always on the lookout for alcohol-free fragrances for my baby. I find that alcohol-based baby colognes are either too strong for Ayu, and I think that they are more fit for toddlers and adults who want to smell like babies!
Biolane's alcohol-free baby cologne is one of the many hauls I got for Alexa during the 12.12 Lazada Sale. I was, of course, excited to try it for her as soon as I can.
I got the baby cologne as part of the Holiday Gift Set B in Biolane's Official Lazada Store. The package is priced at P1,090, and it includes hair gel (gel coiffant), gentle shampoo, and alcohol-free skin freshening fragrance (eau de toilette/agua de colonia). The baby cologne itself, which comes in a 200 ml spray bottle, is priced at P480 as sold individually.
PROPERTIES AND INGREDIENTS
Biolane claims that this skin fragrance contains 'innovative complex of nourishing, soothing and protecting ingredients'. Moreover, the brand states that:
It has a physiological pH suitable for newborns.
Formulated with Provitamin B5 that contributes to the softening and restoring of skin suppleness.
Formulated with Hydra-Bleine, which is a combination of lipids and wheat proteins that protect and nourish the skin while limiting water loss
Provitamin B5 is also commonly known as panthenol, which is a popular ingredient used as moisturizers and creams, and to speed skin healing and recovery. It is also used as a hair strengthener in shampoo and conditioners because it easily bonds to hair strands.
HOW I USE IT FOR MY BABY
I apply it after each bath and no-rinse cleansing by spraying it directly on Ayu's skin and massaging it afterwards, or spraying it on my palms and massage the product. I avoid the face area when spraying. I also spray one or two spritz to perfume her hair.
SCENT PROFILE
Biolane's Agua de Colonia opens with a delicate floral bouquet reminiscent of honeysuckle, with subtle notes of sweet peas and a lingering citrus background. My partner says that it's 'kinda okay'. For me, though, at first whiff I thought it smelled like the perfume my grandmother used to wear when I was little. Because of the citrus notes, the overall impression of this scent is fresh, bouncy, and leaning on a more feminine feel.
The Verdict
Just like the Mustela Skin Freshener, the scent of this likeable baby fragrance does not stay long. After spraying it on my wrist, almost all of the body of the scent is already gone in 15 minutes. The scent then lingers subtly after the next fifteen minutes, but it can only be detected with a very close sniff. I can still detect a whiff in my baby's hair and skin an hour after application. After two or more hours, the scent is gone. It could be because of the hot and dry weather, as essential oils in the perfume tend to dissipate quickly when the ambient temperature is hot.
Notably, it doesn't leave a sticky feel in the skin after application, which I also liked. It is true, though, that it has a nice moisturizing effect which is not as sticky as Mustela's Skin Freshener. We didn't find any skin irritation after application, all in one week of constant usage after baths and no-rinse cleaning or freshening up throughout the day.
I like that this scent is delicate too, like Mustela's Skin Freshener, but I have to admit that I like Musti Eau de Soin better that either of Mustela's Skin Freshener and Biolane's Agua de Colonia. My verdict: it's First-Time Mama (FTM) Nice-to-Have, but Not Recommended. There are, of course, differences between scent preferences, so if you are looking for moisturizing skin fragrances that are hypoallergenic, Biolane's Skin Freshening Agua de Colonia is a delightful try.
