It has been weeks since I last updated my blog as of this writing! And Baby Ayu has had her share of diaper woes as well. She is 7 months old now (March 2021) and we've experienced a major episode of baby bottom blues last month, when she was diagnosed with diarrhea.
Before I share that particular episode, I'll walk you through our first two choices of diaper brands in this Part II of Baby Ayu's Diaper Diary!
Pampers Premium Care, Newborn Size
When I was seven months pregnant with Ayu, I decided to take advantage of the June 2020 Lazada sale and bought two boxes of newborn size Pampers Premium Care, together with one box of Pampers Sensitive Wipes. One box of diapers contained 4 packs with 66 pieces each. Pampers Premium Care is a bit pricier than other brands, with a regular price of P740 per pack (NB size) in the Official Lazada store.
Review Summary:
This is the first diaper brand we used for Ayu. She was so wee at birth, weighing only 2.42 kgs, but this diaper fit her just fine with some adjustment at the navel (although it is somewhat big for her).
Pampers Premium Care delivers amazing skin protection, with its ultra-soft and breathable cottony cover. Surprisingly, the diaper itself is also thin, but can pack a punch of wee! Newborns pee many times during the day, so choosing Pampers Premium Care was a truly great decision.
There are, of course, some minor flaws. Ayu's poo explosions back then were so 'atomic' that it filled the diaper, with poo leaking out to her legs and some reaching her lower back. I think that improvements can be made on the leak guards to prevent such atomic events. Also, there is no design adjustment as to the strip near the navel. Some brands have 'navel cuts' to protect the delicate belly button of newborns. Pampers can also consider improving the design in that aspect to prevent infection of the navel area due to dirty nappies or poo bombs.
She rarely had any diaper rash with Pampers Premium Care, probably because we've been using Mustela Diaper Rash Cream daily at every diaper change.
At around 3 months, I noticed that Ayu was beginning to outgrow this size. Because I bought too many packs, I decided to just sell the remaining 3 packs online on Facebook. Still, it is still worth it to have bought that much, though one box (or 4 packs with 66 pieces each) would have been enough.
So that's a good tip, fellow FTMs: buy at least two to four whole packs of newborn size diapers instead of two boxes, because most babies will quickly outgrow this size. We happened to use the Newborn size until 3 months because our Baby Ayu is a small baby (like her little Mama).
Moony Natural (Organic Cotton), Small Size
Having read rave reviews of this Japanese brand, (made by Unicharm, the same manufacturer of Mamypoko) I also purchased a pack of Moony Natural Organic Cotton to try it out for my baby.
Review Summary:
Honestly, this is the most expensive diaper that I've purchased for Ayu, but hands down the softest, with the most luxurious feel. It feels much like a super soft cotton fabric, and I'm not exaggerating. I can say that Ayu gets super comfortable wearing this diaper. The only downside is the price: this 58-pc pack costs a regular price of P888, or a whopping P15.30 per diaper! The good news is that Moony participates in most Lazada scampaigns, so watch out for big discounts during mall-wide sales.
When we used this brand, we noticed that Baby Ayu poops when her diapers are freshly changed! I'm not sure if this is just a coincidence, or if she feels too comfortable pooping in newly-changed nappies. Like Pampers Premium, it is also thin but incredibly absorbent. I also love how it fits in Ayu's bum! The leak guards are secure and snug, and the waist bands are also stretchy but don't leave skin marks. I just love, love this diaper so much. It is a personal favorite too!
Baby Ayu's Sad Diaper Rash Experience
We skipped using Moony Natural after consuming a pack and moved on to Moony Airfit (because I only bought one to try). We resumed to using this diaper again when Ayu was 5 months old. Unfortunately, due to diarrhea, she experienced a bad diaper rash that left her skin almost raw and severely inflamed. We don't attribute the diaper rash though to the diaper itself, but there might be other factors involved.
I usually work during the day and we have a babysitter take care of Ayu. Over the course of some days, she was instructed by my mom-in-law to use petroleum jelly in covering minor rashes, skipping on diaper creams. We also started to use Biolane Diaper Cream at the time, so it was unclear what aggravated the rash. It was distressing and painful to my baby. Her pedia explained that because of diarrhea and the repeated cleansing and wiping of the bum area that accompany it, this can aggravate rash and strip off the skin barrier. We were advised to use Drapolene, which contains benzalkonium chloride and cetirimide. The rash healed in two weeks. It wasn't a short time, but I'm glad that Baby Ayu is much better now. After this incident, we also opted to use washable cloth diapers and lampins from time to time to let her skin breathe. I also instructed our babysitter not to use petroleum jelly anymore.
This incident made me distressed and disappointed in myself as well, because this happened not under my watch, and I'm not able to take care of Ayu full-time. Some working moms know the 'guilt' that I'm talking about, but I don't really have much of a choice. We need to do our best for our children, and sometimes these sacrifices entail not being able to look after your kids yourself. So hugs to all working moms... I know, you are doing your best, like me.
See you in our next Diaper Diary post, fellow moms!
In our next Diaper Diaries, I also write about my reviews on Moony Airfit, Rascal and Friends, and Mamypoko!
