Micellar Water for Babies? Mustela No Rinse Cleansing Water Product Review

Updated: Dec 18, 2020

Most moms love baby products that instantly cleanse and refresh. Our babies easily sweat during the day, especially in a hot and humid country like ours, and not to mention how active our little ones get with lots of air punching and kicking, tumbling and crawling! It's not surprising that our little rascals need refreshing many times during the day. When baby wipes are not enough to clean off those milky, gooey drools that often dry up in our babies' chins and necks, as well as the sour goodness that comes with sweating and tumbling, you know that a little bit of cleansing is required. Traces of poo bombs, as well as the smelly evidence they leave in our babies' bottoms, also need some cleansing-loving.

As of this writing, I use two no-rinse cleansing products for my Ayu, namely the No Rinse Cleansing Water and Cleansing Milk from the brand Mustela. It's no surprising that I'm a fan of Mustela, it being my first choice of baby toiletries and products for baby skin. The popular French brand has over 60 years of research experience for developing products for babies. Perhaps they are more well-known in Europe and in the US, but the brand is also gaining popularity among millennial moms here in the Philippines as well. They already have a well-established Lazada page.

Mustela No Rinse Cleansing Water

This no-rinse cleansing water has a mild, classic Mustela scent, but it smells more like a subtle astringent. A 300-ml bottle has a regular price of P650 in the official Lazada store. It's just like water, only scented and with skin-loving ingredients. Like most Mustela products, this also contains avocado extract which is claimed to maintain and protect the skin barrier. It also contains mild surfactants that give the product its cleansing properties, and allantoin, a skin softening ingredient that also prevents rashes. Aloe, a skin soother, is also listed as one of the ingredients. Mustela developed this no-rinse cleansing water for babies with normal skin types. Mustela also has a soothing cleansing water for extra sensitive babies, which I haven't tried yet on Ayu, as her skin is not that sensitive or easily irritated.

How I use this product on my baby:

We use this mostly to clean Ayu's face and neck area whenever she gets malagkit due to sweating, drooling or hot weather. We put a good amount on a cotton ball or cotton pad, enough to soak the pad, and clean her face, neck and chest area, and sometimes, even arms and legs. Most of the time, we ran out of cotton pads fast, so I learned to put cleansing water on baby wipes instead. We also use it to clean her diaper area whenever she poops.

Verdict:

Upon application, the product foams a little bit. Sometimes, you won't notice the foaming at all as it dissipates quickly. This might be due to the mild surfactants in the product, which means it works as expected of a cleanser.

The product leaves a subtle sticky feel on the skin at first, but when dried completely, the skin becomes smooth as normal and looks hydrated. If you have used micellar water on your face before, it feels like that, but milder.

However, I find that to clean the whole body (which we have done before; the weather was too cold so we skipped the usual bath and opted to clean her with this instead), you would use a fairly heavy volume of this product to clean adequately. I might be using a little too much, especially on the diaper area, but I feel that you need a good amount to clean baby's poopy bottom. If you use this product everyday, consistently, the 300 ml bottle might last a month, or two if you are tipid!

The scent isn't particularly offensive, nor enjoyable. I would love though if they put a more soothing or calming fragrance on it (I mean, they have perfumed water, so why not put the same on a cleanser?). My partner said that he doesn't like the scent at all; according to him, it smells like medicated water.

Does it prevent rash? I'm not sure. We also use Mustela's diaper rash cream, so that product might be doing the job, and not this one. This cleansing water doesn't particularly do anything remarkable aside from cleansing with a little bit of hydration afterwards.

My Advice:

Well, I'm not too happy at all using this product, but I think it works great. The major reason for my not-so-good verdict is that it is not sulit. The product runs out easily. Imagine what you can buy with P650! This is FTM-'oh well': no, I don't really recommend it, but I like it.

I suppose that this is still a good buy if you travel with your baby a lot, because cleansing your baby with this cleansing water is convenient. If you're already happy with cleansing your baby with good ol' baby wipes (aside from a full bath), this product may seem like an excess or unnecessary.
